Shorten a metal link bracelet at home with a simple pin tool. Follow the steps below to get a comfortable, centred fit.
A watch link adjustment tool (pin pusher), a few minutes, and a clean surface so small pins do not roll away.
A quick overview before the full step-by-step.
Try the watch on as-is and see how much slack you have on the wrist.
Pinch the band evenly from the clasp and note how many links to remove on each side.
Push out the pins with your tool, drop the extra links, then pin the clasp back on flush.
Work slowly and keep removed pins — you will reuse them when reattaching the clasp.
Put the watch on without adjusting it. Note how loose it feels — the more slack there is, the more links you will need to remove.
Find the clasp and pinch the band evenly from both sides until it sits at a comfortable size on your wrist.
Make sure you remove the same number of links on either side of the clasp. That keeps the watch face centred on your wrist.
Note how many links need to come off each side before you start — it is easy to lose count once pins are out.
Use a watch link adjustment tool to push out the pin holding each wristband link in place.
Push from the same direction as the arrow marked on the watch band. Press the sharp end of the tool against the head of the link pin.
When a small amount of the pin protrudes from the other side, pull it out. Repeat for every link you need to remove, then do the same on the other side of the band.
Re-attach the clasp to the band. Align the clasp link with the last remaining link on one side — you should see a clear hole for the pin.
Take one of the pins you removed and insert it into the hole. It should slide most of the way in on its own, leaving only a little to finish.
Use the adjustment tool and turn the nozzle clockwise until the pin is fully seated. It should sit flush with the side of the band — nothing protruding. Repeat on the other side of the clasp.
Important: the finished pin should sit flush with the side of the band — nothing sticking out on either side.
Small details that make resizing smoother.
Pins are tiny and easy to lose. Lay down a light cloth or tray before you start.
Removing more from one side than the other will shift the clasp off-centre and throw off the look on your wrist.
If a pin will not move, double-check the arrow direction. Forcing it the wrong way can damage the link.
